At THA Football Centres, we know that every child develops differently.
Some children arrive at their first session having barely kicked a football before. Others already play constantly at home, attend a grassroots club or are ready to be challenged in a more advanced environment.
That is why we have developed the THA Player Pathway.
Our pathway provides a clear journey through our football programmes for children aged 2–11, while giving our coaches the flexibility to make decisions based on the individual player rather than simply their age.
From a child’s first experience of football in our 2–4 Parent & Toddler sessions, through our 5–7 and 8–11 Beginner and Advanced groups, the aim remains the same: provide the right environment, at the right time, for each individual player.
Where Does the THA Player Pathway Start?
For many children, their THA journey begins in our 2–4 Parent & Toddler football sessions.
At this age, we aren’t interested in trying to create technically perfect footballers.
We want children to have a positive first experience of football and physical activity.
Sessions introduce children to movement, coordination, the football and the experience of being part of a group. Parents and carers are involved too, helping create an environment where children feel comfortable exploring and learning.
These early experiences provide foundations that children can build upon as they get older.
Moving Into Our 5–7 Beginner Football Sessions
The next stage of the THA Player Pathway is our 5–7 Beginner programme.
For children progressing from Parent & Toddler football, this represents a significant step. They are becoming more independent and beginning to experience more structured football coaching.
However, our Beginner sessions aren’t exclusively for children who have previously attended THA.
A child can join the pathway at any stage.
Our 5–7 Beginner environment is designed to help players develop fundamental football skills while continuing to build their confidence and enjoyment.
Players receive plenty of opportunities to work with the football, developing areas such as ball mastery, dribbling, passing, receiving and shooting while gradually improving their understanding of the game.
When Is a Player Ready for the 5–7 Advanced Group?
As players develop, some will require an additional level of challenge.
That’s where our 5–7 Advanced sessions come into the pathway.
Moving into an Advanced group isn’t simply a reward for scoring lots of goals or being one of the strongest players in a Beginner session.
Our coaches look at the whole player.
Technical ability is important, but so are confidence, decision-making, understanding of the game and how consistently a player can demonstrate different skills within a session.
Our THA Player Metrics help coaches monitor that development and provide a clearer picture of where each individual player currently sits.
When we believe an Advanced environment would provide the appropriate next challenge, we can begin discussing that progression.
The important word is appropriate.
We don’t want to rush children through the pathway simply for the sake of moving them up.
Progressing Into Our 8–11 Beginner Group
As children move into the next age bracket, our 8–11 Beginner sessions provide another stage of the pathway.
The football naturally becomes more challenging as players get older.
While technical development remains important, players increasingly begin to consider what is happening around them.
Where is the space?
Where are their teammates?
Where is the opposition?
Should they pass, dribble or shoot?
What should they do when they don’t have the football?
The objective isn’t simply to teach children more techniques. It’s to help them begin applying their skills effectively within the game.
For some players this might be their fourth stage of the THA pathway. For another child, an 8–11 Beginner session might be their first ever THA session.
Both players can have a place within the programme.
Our 8–11 Advanced Football Sessions
Our 8–11 Advanced groups provide the highest level of challenge within our current weekly Player Pathway.
At this stage, players are expected to apply their technical ability within increasingly realistic football situations.
Decision-making, game understanding, movement, positioning, combination play and performing under pressure become increasingly important.
Again, progression isn’t automatic.
Being the correct age doesn’t necessarily mean that moving into an Advanced environment is the best thing for that player.
We want players to be challenged without being overwhelmed.
Finding that balance is an important part of our job as coaches.
The THA Player Pathway Isn’t a Race
This is probably the most important part of our pathway.
There isn’t a prize for reaching the Advanced group first.
Children develop physically, technically, socially and emotionally at different rates.
One player might progress quickly in their technical ability but need longer to develop their confidence. Another might have excellent game understanding but still be developing certain skills with the football.
That’s completely normal.
Our pathway isn’t designed as a ladder that every child needs to climb as quickly as possible.
Instead, it gives us a structure for finding an environment where a player can enjoy their football while receiving an appropriate level of challenge.
How Our Curriculum Supports the Pathway
The Player Pathway doesn’t operate on its own.
It works alongside the wider THA curriculum.
Each month, our sessions follow a specific football theme. Across the year these include areas such as Attacking the Goal, Keeping the Ball, 1v1 Battles, Creating Space, Attacking with Speed, Winning the Ball, Playing Forward, Creating Chances, Defending Together, Quick Reactions, Game Intelligence and Playing the Game.
The theme might be shared across THA, but what it looks like within a session changes considerably.
A 2–4-year-old and an 11-year-old shouldn’t be experiencing the same activity simply because they’re working under the same monthly theme.
Instead, the complexity and expectations develop alongside the player.
This allows us to create greater consistency across our programme while still providing age and ability-appropriate coaching.
How THA Player Metrics Help Us Monitor Development
Alongside our curriculum, we use THA Player Metrics to help our coaches understand individual development.
We don’t want progression decisions to come down to one good session or simply one coach’s immediate impression.
Our Player Metrics help us consider development across areas including:
- Football skills
- Confidence
- Social development
- Game understanding
The specific expectations change depending on the player’s age and stage of development.
Rather than formally testing children, our coaches observe them naturally during sessions and use Emerging, Developing and Secured to help understand their progress.
The purpose isn’t to rank children against each other.
It gives our coaches more information to help make better decisions about the individual player.
What Happens After THA?
The THA Player Pathway doesn’t necessarily finish with our 8–11 Advanced group.
For some children, the next step might be grassroots football.
We’ve already seen players progress through different stages of THA before moving into football teams.
Arthur Bewick is a recent example. Arthur started with us when we first introduced our 2–4 Parent & Toddler sessions with Coach Simon. He subsequently progressed through our 5–7 Beginner and 5–7 Advanced groups, reached our 8–11 Beginner programme, and has now moved on after getting into a football team.
That’s a journey we’re delighted to have played a part in.
But joining a team isn’t the only definition of success.
Some children already play for grassroots teams while attending THA. Others might have no interest in competitive football at all and simply enjoy coming to their THA session every week.
Our pathway needs to accommodate those players too.
Different Players. Different Journeys.
If you looked at the THA Player Pathway on paper, it would be easy to see it as:
2–4 Parent & Toddler → 5–7 Beginner → 5–7 Advanced → 8–11 Beginner → 8–11 Advanced
In reality, player development is rarely that straightforward.
Children can join THA at different ages. They can spend different amounts of time within each environment. Some may move between Beginner and Advanced groups. Some will play grassroots football alongside THA. Others may eventually leave us because they’ve found the next opportunity that’s right for them.
That’s why the pathway provides structure without treating every child the same.
The destination isn’t the most important part.
What matters is making sure the environment they’re in right now is helping them develop, build confidence and enjoy playing football.
Start Your Child’s THA Football Journey
THA Football Centres provides structured children’s football coaching for ages 2–11 across Leeds and Sheffield.
Whether your child is kicking a football for the first time or already has experience and needs a greater challenge, our Player Pathway helps us provide an environment appropriate to their stage of development.
Your child’s THA journey doesn’t need to look like anybody else’s.
It just needs to be right for them.
