At THA Football Centres, we believe every child develops differently.
Some children grow in confidence quickly. Some need more time. Some find football easy straight away, whilst others need encouragement and support.
That is why we use our THA Player Metrics system.
Our player metrics help us understand how every child is progressing so we can make sure they are being challenged, supported and enjoying their football.
We do not use formal tests or compare children against each other. Instead, we observe players naturally during sessions and use what we see to help every child improve.
Why We Use Player Metrics
Our player metrics help us to:
- Recognise progress
- Build confidence
- Understand strengths
- Identify what a child may need help with
- Make sure children are in the right group
- Support long-term development
We believe improvement is not just about football ability.
We also look at:
- Confidence
- Attitude
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Decision making
- Enjoyment
Because often the biggest change parents notice is not just better football, but a child who is happier, more confident and more willing to try new things.
How We Measure Progress
We assess players against age-appropriate targets and look at how consistently they can perform different skills.
Children move through three stages:
- Emerging – beginning to show the skill
- Developing – showing the skill more regularly
- Secured – performing the skill confidently and consistently

This allows us to see clear progress over time and make sure children are working on the right things for their age and ability.
What We Look For

Although the details change depending on the age group, our player metrics focus on four main areas:

- Joining in
- Trying new things
- Recovering from mistakes
- Believing in themselves

- Ball control
- Dribbling
- Passing
- Receiving
- Shooting
- Defending

- Communication
- Respect
- Attitude
Game Understanding

- Movement
- Positioning
- Understanding when to attack or defend
Different Metrics For Different Ages
Parent & Toddler (Ages 2–4)
For our youngest children, we focus mainly on:
- Confidence
- Movement and coordination
- Listening and following instructions
- Basic ball skills
- Social development
At this age, progress is often about becoming more comfortable, joining in more and building confidence.
KS1 Football (Ages 5–7)
For KS1 players, we begin to look more closely at:
- Ball mastery
- Dribbling
- Passing and receiving
- Shooting
- 1v1 confidence
- Understanding simple game situations
At this stage, children are learning the foundations of football and beginning to understand when and how to use their skills.
KS2 Football (Ages 8–11)
For KS2 players, we place greater focus on:
- Decision making
- Playing under pressure
- Movement and positioning
- Teamwork
- Defending and attacking
- Understanding the game
As players get older, the focus moves from simply performing a skill to understanding when, where and why to use it.
How Monthly Themes Link to Player Metrics
Every month at THA Football Centres has a different theme.
Our player metrics link directly to these themes, which means we can focus on different areas of development throughout the year.
For example:
- During “Keeping the Ball”, we focus more on control, dribbling and receiving
- During “Creating Chances”, we focus more on movement, passing and decision making
- During “Defending Together”, we focus more on teamwork, communication and defending
This gives us a clearer picture of how each child is improving over time.
What Progress Can Look Like
Progress is different for every child.
For one child, progress may be becoming confident enough to join in without a parent.
For another, it may be learning to dribble with more control or make better decisions in games.
Examples of progress could include:
- Becoming more confident speaking to teammates
- Showing more control with the ball
- Beginning to move into space
- Learning when to pass or dribble
- Becoming more resilient after mistakes
We celebrate all progress, not just the obvious moments.
Why Parents Value Our Approach
Parents often tell us they like our player metrics because they can see that there is a clear plan and pathway for their child.
They know:
- Their child is being supported
- Their child is improving
- Sessions are not random
- Coaches understand what each child needs
Most importantly, they can see their child growing in confidence and enjoying football.
