May Monthly Theme at THA Football Centres
At THA Football Centres, every month follows a structured theme designed to help players build a wider understanding of football over time.
This Month’s Theme: Defending Together
Throughout May, all THA sessions are focused on Defending Together.
While defending may look very different depending on a child’s age, the core aim remains the same:
Helping players understand how to stop opposition attacks, protect space and work with others defensively.
Our curriculum ensures this theme is developed differently across every age group so players learn age-appropriate defensive skills that build year after year.
Ages 2–4: Parent & Toddler Sessions
For our youngest players, defending is introduced through the foundations of:
- Listening
- Reacting
- Staying close
- Spatial awareness
- Following instructions
- Taking turns
At this stage, children are not learning formal defending concepts. Instead, we focus on movement, awareness and simple reactions that lay the groundwork for future defensive understanding.
Example activities:
- Chase and recover games
- Movement races
- Stop-and-go activities
- Protecting simple spaces
The focus is on fun while building the physical and social foundations needed later.
Ages 5–7 Beginner: Building Defensive Basics
For KS1 beginners, Defending Together begins with introducing:
- Staying goal-side
- Applying basic pressure
- Winning the ball safely
- Recovering after losing possession
- Understanding attack vs defence
At this age, players are learning that defending is not just chasing the ball — it is about positioning and effort.
Key player metrics:
- Able to stay goal-side
- Beginning to defend in a 1v1
- Recovering quickly
- Showing defensive effort
Sessions remain fun and engaging, but players begin to understand the role of defending.
Ages 5–7 Advanced: Developing Individual Defensive Skills
Advanced KS1 players begin to develop:
- Better 1v1 defending
- Timing tackles
- Pressuring effectively
- Delaying attackers
- Supporting teammates defensively
Players are encouraged to recognise when to press, when to recover and how to work with teammates.
Focus areas:
- Defensive body shape
- Applying pressure
- Communication
- Covering nearby space
This stage bridges the gap between basic defending and team defending.
Ages 8–11 Beginner: Introducing Team Defensive Concepts
For KS2 beginners, players start learning:
- Defensive shape
- Covering teammates
- Pressing safely
- Delaying attacks
- Tracking runners
Here, defending becomes more tactical.
Players are taught to understand:
- Where to stand
- How to support teammates
- How to recover into shape
- How to defend space, not just the ball
Player metrics may include:
- Able to defend in a 1v1
- Able to cover a teammate
- Able to recover quickly
- Able to delay attackers
Ages 8–11 Advanced: Defending as a Team
For our advanced KS2 players, Defending Together becomes much more sophisticated.
Players develop:
- Team pressing
- Compact defensive shape
- Cover and balance
- Transition defending
- Communication
- Recognising defensive triggers
At this stage, players are learning to defend collectively, preparing them for more realistic game situations.
Advanced concepts include:
- Pressing as a unit
- Recognising overloads
- Defensive communication
- Protecting central areas
- Quick defensive transitions
This gives players a far deeper understanding of football beyond technical ability alone.
Why Monthly Themes Matter
By using structured themes like Defending Together, we ensure children do not simply repeat random drills.
Instead, they:
- Build knowledge progressively
- Develop game understanding
- Improve age-appropriate skills
- Gain confidence in multiple areas of football
- Learn through repetition and progression
This is one of the key reasons THA sessions offer a clearer long-term pathway than many traditional football programmes.
Defending Is More Than Tackling
One of the biggest misconceptions in youth football is that defending simply means winning the ball.
At THA, we teach players that defending includes:
- Positioning
- Communication
- Awareness
- Teamwork
- Recovery
- Decision making
By teaching these principles early, we help players become more complete footballers.
Final Thoughts
This month’s Defending Together theme is another important part of our long-term player development model.
From toddlers learning movement and awareness, to advanced players understanding tactical defensive systems, every session is designed to help children develop properly for their age and stage.
At THA Football Centres, we are not just developing better attackers.
We are developing smarter, more complete players.
We are creating the ‘all rounded player’
