August Monthly Theme at THA Football Centres
Over the past year, our players have worked through a series of monthly themes designed to develop every aspect of their football.
From Keeping the Ball and Creating Chances to Defending Together, Quick Reactions and Game Intelligence, each month has built upon the last to help children become more confident and capable players.
This month, we bring everything together.
August’s Theme: Playing the Game
Throughout August, our focus is simple—Playing the Game.
While every session will still have clear learning objectives and player metric targets, August gives players more opportunities to apply everything they’ve learned in realistic game situations.
Because ultimately, football is learnt by playing football.

Why We Finish with Playing the Game
Children don’t develop by performing isolated drills every week.
They develop by having opportunities to:
- Make decisions
- Solve problems
- Experience success and failure
- Adapt to different situations
- Learn from realistic football moments
August allows players to transfer the skills they’ve developed throughout the year into games where they can make their own decisions and discover solutions.
As coaches, our role becomes guiding learning rather than constantly directing it.
How Playing the Game Looks Across the Ages
Although every age group spends more time playing games this month, every session still has age-specific learning outcomes linked to our curriculum and player metrics.
Parent & Toddler (Ages 2–4)
For our youngest players, “Playing the Game” is all about confidence and enjoyment.
Children continue developing:
- Movement foundations
- Spatial awareness
- Object control
- Confidence to explore
- Following simple instructions
Games are simple, exciting and full of opportunities to move, chase, balance, kick and celebrate success.
At this age, playing the game means discovering football through fun.

KS1 Beginner (Ages 5–7)
Our beginner players begin applying their technical foundations in more game-like situations.
Throughout August they’ll continue developing:
- Ball mastery
- Dribbling
- Passing
- Receiving
- Shooting
- Recognising simple attacking opportunities
Rather than practising skills in isolation, players are encouraged to use them naturally during small-sided games.
This helps them understand not just how to perform a skill, but when to use it.

KS1 Advanced (Ages 5–7)
For our advanced players, August is about linking technical ability with decision making.
Players will continue working on:
- Supporting teammates
- Creating space
- Receiving under pressure
- Combination play
- Game awareness
Sessions provide more opportunities for players to solve football problems independently while coaches guide learning through questions and challenges.
The emphasis shifts from coaching every action to allowing players to recognise solutions for themselves.

KS2 Beginner (Ages 8–11)
As players move into KS2, games become increasingly realistic.
Throughout August they continue developing:
- Movement off the ball
- Supporting teammates
- Creating passing lanes
- Decision making
- Attacking and defending principles
Players are encouraged to scan, communicate and work together while applying everything they’ve learned throughout the year.

KS2 Advanced (Ages 8–11)
For our oldest players, Playing the Game is about understanding football as a complete game.
Sessions challenge players to:
- Recognise transition moments
- Create and exploit space
- Combine with teammates
- Make decisions under pressure
- Adapt to changing game situations
Rather than stopping play constantly, coaches allow games to flow, creating opportunities for players to think, communicate and solve problems in real time.
This helps prepare players for competitive football and develops greater independence on the pitch.

Learning Through Games
A common misconception is that games are simply the reward at the end of a session.
At THA Football Centres, games are one of our most powerful coaching tools.
Within games, players naturally experience:
- Success and failure
- Pressure
- Decision making
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Creativity
- Resilience
These are all essential parts of becoming a complete footballer.
By carefully designing game-based practices, we can still target specific learning outcomes while allowing children to enjoy the freedom of playing.
Linking Back to Our Curriculum
Playing the Game isn’t about taking a break from learning.
It’s about bringing the whole curriculum together.
Throughout August, players will revisit many of the skills and concepts they’ve developed across the year, including:
- Ball mastery
- Passing and receiving
- Dribbling
- Creating chances
- Defending together
- Quick reactions
- Game intelligence
This helps reinforce learning and gives players the confidence to apply their skills in realistic football situations.
More Than Just Matches
At THA Football Centres, when we say “Playing the Game”, we don’t simply mean letting children play an unrestricted match for an hour.
Our games are designed with purpose.
Every activity has a clear objective linked to the curriculum, allowing players to experience realistic football situations while continuing to develop.
The result is an environment where children can enjoy playing, make decisions independently and continue progressing every time they step onto the pitch.
Final Thoughts
August is a celebration of everything our players have worked towards throughout the year.
It’s an opportunity to enjoy football, apply new skills, solve problems and build confidence through playing the game itself.
Because while coaching is important, the greatest learning often happens when children are given the freedom to play.
At THA Football Centres, we don’t just coach football.
We create environments where children can learn, explore and truly experience the game.
