July Monthly Theme at THA Football Centres
At THA Football Centres, we believe that football is about more than just technique.
A player can have fantastic ball control, an excellent first touch and a powerful shot, but if they don’t know when, where or why to use those skills, they will struggle to reach their full potential.
That’s why our July monthly theme is Game Intelligence.
Throughout this month, every player across THA Football Centres will be developing their understanding of the game through age-appropriate activities designed to improve awareness, decision making and football understanding.
What is Game Intelligence?
Game intelligence is a player’s ability to understand what is happening around them and make good decisions.
It’s about recognising:
- Where the space is
- When to pass
- When to dribble
- When to shoot
- When to defend
- How to support teammates
- How to solve problems during a game
The best footballers aren’t always the quickest or strongest—they’re often the ones who recognise situations early and make the right decision.
This month, we’re helping every player take another step towards becoming smarter footballers.
How We Develop Game Intelligence Through the Ages
One of the things that makes THA Football Centres different is that every monthly theme progresses throughout our pathway.
Although every player is working on Game Intelligence, what that looks like is very different depending on their age and stage of development.
Parent & Toddler (Ages 2–4)
For our youngest players, game intelligence starts with the simplest building blocks.
Children begin learning to:
- Listen to instructions
- React to simple cues
- Recognise colours and targets
- Understand basic directions
- Follow simple game rules
These activities might not look like traditional football, but they are developing essential cognitive skills that children will build on as they grow.
At this age, we want children to become confident learners who can recognise information and react positively within fun games.
KS1 Beginner (Ages 5–7)
As players become more confident with the ball, we begin introducing simple football decisions.
Throughout July, players will work on recognising attacking opportunities and understanding the difference between attacking and defending situations.
Rather than simply dribbling every time they receive the ball, they’ll begin asking themselves questions such as:
- Is there space to dribble?
- Should I pass?
- Can I move into space?
- Where is the goal?
These are the first steps towards understanding the game rather than simply playing in it.
KS1 Advanced (Ages 5–7)
For our advanced players, Game Intelligence moves beyond recognising situations to making better decisions within them.
Players will be encouraged to:
- Recognise attacking opportunities earlier
- Decide when to pass, dribble or shoot
- Support teammates with better movement
- Understand how their decisions affect the team
By introducing more realistic game situations, players begin to develop confidence in making decisions under pressure.
KS2 Beginner (Ages 8–11)
At KS2, players begin developing a much deeper understanding of football.
This month focuses on:
- Decision making
- Movement off the ball
- Supporting teammates
- Recognising space
- Understanding attacking principles
Players are encouraged to constantly scan the game, think ahead and make positive decisions before they receive the ball.
These habits help players become more effective in matches and build confidence in possession.
KS2 Advanced (Ages 8–11)
For our advanced players, Game Intelligence becomes increasingly tactical.
Sessions will challenge players to:
- Recognise attacking opportunities
- Understand when to switch play
- Read opposition movement
- Make decisions under pressure
- Adapt to changing game situations
Rather than coaches providing all the answers, players are encouraged to solve problems for themselves, helping them become independent thinkers on the pitch.
This develops not only better footballers, but more confident decision makers.
Why We Use Monthly Themes
Every month at THA Football Centres follows a different theme.
These themes are carefully planned so that players revisit key concepts throughout the year while developing new skills and understanding.
By linking every session to our curriculum and player metrics, we ensure children experience consistent, progressive learning rather than repeating the same activities each week.

Final Thoughts
Throughout July, our goal isn’t simply to produce players who can perform skills.
Our goal is to develop players who understand the game, make intelligent decisions and play with confidence.
From our youngest toddlers learning to follow simple cues, to our oldest players making tactical decisions under pressure, every session has been carefully designed to help children continue progressing on their football journey.
